UPSC Age Calculator — check your age for Civil Services eligibility
For the UPSC Civil Services Examination (IAS, IPS, IFS and allied services), the first eligibility question is almost always age: am I old enough, and am I still young enough? The calculator below gives you your exact age in years, months and days. Set "Age at date" to 1 August of your exam year — the date UPSC generally counts age from — and compare the result with the general limits below.
🔒 100% private: the dates you enter never leave your device. All calculations happen in your browser — nothing is uploaded, stored, or seen by us.
General UPSC age limits (from recent notifications)
As a general guide, the Civil Services age rules in recent notifications have been:
| Category | Generally: minimum age | Generally: maximum age |
|---|---|---|
| General / Unreserved | 21 years | 32 years |
| OBC | 21 years | 35 years (3-year relaxation) |
| SC / ST | 21 years | 37 years (5-year relaxation) |
| PwBD (General) | 21 years | 42 years (10-year relaxation) |
| PwBD (OBC) | 21 years | 45 years |
| PwBD (SC / ST) | 21 years | 47 years |
Further relaxations have generally applied to some other groups, such as ex-servicemen and certain domiciled categories — again, the notification for your year is the only authoritative source. The number of attempts has also generally been limited (6 for General, 9 for OBC, no limit for SC/ST in recent notifications), but attempts are a separate rule from age and are not checked by this calculator.
How to check your age for UPSC, step by step
- Enter your date of birth exactly as it appears on your matriculation certificate — UPSC treats that document as proof of age.
- Set "Age at date" to 1 August of the year you plan to take the exam (for example, 01/08/2027 for the 2027 exam). This is the date UPSC generally counts age from.
- Read your exact age in years, months and days, and compare the years figure with the row for your category in the table above.
- If you are close to a boundary — within a few months of 21 or of your category's upper limit — check the official notification carefully: a few days can decide eligibility.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum and maximum age for UPSC?
Generally, you must be at least 21 and at most 32 years old (General category) on 1 August of the exam year, with relaxations for reserved categories — see the table above. These are general figures from recent notifications; confirm them in the official notification for your year.
How is age calculated for UPSC — as on which date?
Age is generally counted as on 1 August of the examination year. Use the calculator above with "Age at date" set to 1 August of your exam year to get the figure that matters.
What if my birthday falls after 1 August?
Then on 1 August you are still the age you turned at your last birthday. The calculator handles this automatically: set "Age at date" to 1 August and it shows your age on that day, not your age today.
Does this calculator decide whether I am eligible?
No. It only calculates your exact age. Eligibility also depends on the official notification's rules, your category certificates, the number of attempts, and educational qualifications. Treat the result as a guide and verify everything officially.
Is my date of birth private?
Completely. The calculator runs in your browser; the dates you enter are never uploaded or stored anywhere.
